Our client, a small business lender, are expanding from Europe into the US and looking to build a team to support the rapid and dynamic growth of their business. This is an opportunity to join at an exciting time for the business, giving you the chance to make your mark and be involved from the very beginning. We are currently looking for a Lead Credit Analyst to join the team to be responsible for ensuring that all applications are underwritten to the highest possible standard, continually looking for ways to improve and making sure the business is using the best data to make decisions.

Your day-to-day activities

  • Ensuring all applications are underwritten quickly, efficiently and in accordance with our Credit Policy
  • Interacting with our internal IT, Operations, Fraud, Compliance and Collections teams to ensure we acquire the right customers in the right way
  • Using your advanced analytical skill to drive Credit decision making and Risk strategy
  • Conduct retrospective analysis and implement test-and-learn/champion-challenger strategies to refine our Credit Policy
  • Implement and review portfolio monitoring to ensure our portfolio stays on track as we grow
  • Source and evaluate new data sources to see if they will add value within the current decisioning process e.g., Open banking sources
  • Cohesively working with business stakeholders (from C-level execs to front line staff) to ensure risk analysis can be implemented seamlessly without deterioration to customer experience or complex IT builds
  • Constantly refine our decisioning process to improve its efficiency through greater use of automation
  • Review lending applications along with supporting credit reference agency and financial data in order to make a credit decision where necessary
  • Assist in internal reviews and external audits conducted on our behalf as required (including adherence to our underwriting, collections, AML, Fair Lending, complaints, and vulnerable customer policies)
  • Support with ad hoc analytical tasks e.g., review of limit setting strategy, product usage or changes to lending criteria
  • Coaching and mentoring more junior colleagues on the tools and techniques of Credit Risk

Skills & Experience required:

  • Several years of experience in credit risk ideally in the small business space
  • Experience overseeing the underwriting and credit decisioning process
  • Deliver quantifiable improvements while effectively communicating complex solutions in a simple manner
  • A broad understanding of how businesses operate, financial statements and credit files
  • Willing to operate in a fast-moving environment, initiating and driving quick pilots to obtain ‘soft’ information (e.g., customer feedback/qualitative market research)
  • Data-driven mindset, able to supplement soft analysis completed within the business with hard data (e.g., A/B test outcomes) through business modelling and analytics
  • Ability to demonstrate best practices in Responsible Lending putting the customer first and protecting the business against bad debt through inaccurate lending decisions
  • Must be able to communicate clearly at all levels and capable of writing procedures, presentations and reports
  • Adaptable and be able to embrace change including resilience under pressure
  • A thirst to investigate, propose and embrace new methods and technology
  • Uses SQL and Excel/google sheets on a daily basis to extract and analyse data, experience with a data visualisation tool such as PowerBI/Tableau/Looker is a plus
  • Customer-centric approach to growth while balancing the need to remain risk-averse and compliant in a fast-moving regulated environment
  • Able to work autonomously, strong judgement and proactivity within a small credit team and the potential to progress into leading a small credit team
  • Start-up experience is a major plus
